Fontegara: A Working Kit 5 – MP3 files
A downloadable MP3 files
This 2003 recording is the only material I’ve decided not to make available for free: being the imperfect result of an informal, low-fi home recording session, I feel it should only be circulated to those who are genuinely interested in working with it.
I believe that listening to a combination of the machine-produced MIDI files (for those who want maximum rhythmic accuracy and no interpretation) and these home recordings (for a more human, breathy experience) will be of great value to those interested in studying Fontegara. So, please, don’t take it as a final, professionally produced material, but rather as a working kit or a learning tool for those who want to experience Fontegara beyond paper or PDF images.
About the recording
In the summer of 2003, I borrowed a DAT recorder (my thanks to my former teacher Guillermo Peñalver!) and made a home recording of the first two Regole or chapters of Ganassi’s Fontegara (1535). I recorded each example in a single take as I read through it, and I later added some reverb. I can’t remember what kind of audio editing software I had access to at the time (Audacity, I think?), as I probably didn’t even have a computer yet. However, I’ve noticed a few occasional edits, probably to improve a few passages.
I used a selection of Ganassi-style and cylindrical recorders (in g’ and f’) crafted by the late Bob Marvin , some of which I’d only recently received. A quick disclaimer: in 2003, I was a freshly graduated, 25-year-old player, still working toward becoming a more seasoned recorder player. You’ll likely hear a bit of fatigue in my tonguing technique! Unfortunately, I never completed the entire recording. I can’t recall whether I ran out of time, energy, or hard drive space, but who knows? If there’s interest, I may consider finishing it someday—or perhaps this initiative will inspire someone else to do so.
